USAID Private Sector Study Reveals Potential Industries to Enhance Bangladesh’s Economic Growth
Agribusiness, light engineering, ICT and outsourcing, tourism, pharmaceuticals, and healthcare are some of the most promising areas for private sector engagement and investment.
DHAKA, November 5, 2019 — The United States, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), is partnering with the Government of Bangladesh and the Bangladeshi private sector to help diversify Bangladesh’s economy and stimulate new streams of economic growth. USAID’s Comprehensive Private Sector Assessment (PSA) identified agribusiness (food processing), health care, information and communications technology and outsourcing, light engineering, pharmaceuticals, and tourism as some of the most promising industries beyond the ready-made garments (RMG) sector for private sector engagement and investment.
The PSA, conducted between October 2018 and July 2019 by Inspira Advocacy and Consultancy Ltd., a Bangladeshi private consultation firm, examined 16 emerging sectors in total, which also included ceramics, entrepreneurship, leather and leather goods, medical equipment, plastic, renewable energy and energy efficiency, shipbuilding, shrimp and fish, telecommunications, and vehicle assembly. The assessment did not cover some traditional industries, including the energy sector as a whole.
The PSA’s findings support the Government of Bangladesh’s economic diversification reforms initiative and help the private sector deepen its engagement with the government and other stakeholders in order to further promote Bangladesh’s economic growth.
The U.S. Embassy in Bangladesh, through USAID and other sections and in collaboration with the Government of Bangladesh, will analyze the priority sectors identified in the PSA and explore specific strategies for investment and increased engagement with the Bangladeshi private sector in these fields.
The Executive Chairman of the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority Mr. Sirazul Islam, USAID Deputy Administrator Bonnie Glick, and U.S. Deputy Chief of Mission JoAnne Wagner attended the launch in a show of bilateral support towards strengthening Bangladesh’s economy through diversification.

বাংলাদেশি বেসরকারি খাত বিষয়ক কনসালটেশন প্রতিষ্ঠান ইনসপিরা অ্যাডভোকেসি অ্যান্ড কনসালটেন্সি লিমিটেডের মাধ্যমে এই পিএসএ পরিচালিত হয়েছিল ২০১৮ সালের অক্টোবর থেকে ২০১৯ সালের জুলাইয়ের মধ্যে। এতে মোট ১৬টি প্রতিশ্রুতিশীল সম্ভাবনাময় খাত নিরীক্ষা করা হয়। এই তালিকায় আরো ছিল সিরামিকস, অন্ট্রোপ্রুনারশিপ, চামড়া ও চামড়াজাত দ্রব্য, চিকিৎসা সামগ্রী, প্লাস্টিক, নবায়নযোগ্য জ্বালানী ও জ্বালানী দক্ষতা, জাহাজ নির্মাণ, চিংড়ি ও মাছ, টেলিযোগাযোগ এবং মোটরগাড়ি সংযোজন। এই মূল্যায়নে পুরো জ্বালানী খাতসহ কিছু গতানুগতিক শিল্পখাত বিবেচনায় নেওয়া হয়নি।
পিএসএ-এর ফলাফল বাংলাদেশ সরকারের অর্থনৈতিক বহুমুখীকরণ সংস্কার উদ্যোগকে সমর্থন করে এবং বাংলাদেশের অর্থনৈতিক প্রবৃদ্ধিকে আরো এগিয়ে নিতে সরকার ও অন্যান্য অংশীজনের সঙ্গে বেসরকারি খাতের সম্পৃক্ততা আরো গভীর করায় সহায়তা করে।
ইউএসএআইডি ও অন্যান্য বিভাগের মাধ্যমে এবং বাংলাদেশ সরকারের সঙ্গে যৌথভাবে যুক্তরাষ্ট্র দূতাবাস এই পিএসএ-তে সনাক্ত অগ্রাধিকার খাতগুলোকে বিশ্লেষণ করবে এবং এইসব খাতে বিনিয়োগ ও ব্যবসা সম্প্রসারণ করার ক্ষেত্রে সুনির্দিষ্ট কৌশল অনুসন্ধান করবে।
বহুমুখীকরণের মাধ্যমে বাংলাদেশের অর্থনীতিকে শক্তিশালী করার ক্ষেত্রে দ্বিপাক্ষিক সহযোগিতার নিদর্শন হিসেবে এই মূল্যায়ন প্রতিবেদন উন্মোচন অনুষ্ঠানে উপস্থিত ছিলেন বাংলাদেশ বিনিয়োগ উন্নয়ন কর্তৃপক্ষের নির্বাহী চেয়ারম্যান জনাব সিরাজুল ইসলাম, ইউএসএআইডির উপ-প্রশাসক বনি গ্লিক এবং যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের মিশন উপ প্রধান জোঅ্যান ওয়াগনার।
