Travel Alert – U.S. Embassy Dhaka, Bangladesh

Travel Alert – U.S. Embassy Dhaka, Bangladesh (April 9, 2020)

Location:  Bangladesh

Note:  The U.S. Embassy remains open for business.

Event:  The U.S. Department of State and U.S. Embassy Bangladesh have arranged a special chartered flight for U.S. citizens and their families departing Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on Monday, April 13, 2020.

This flight will include a Dhaka to Doha, Qatar leg and an onward connecting flight to Dulles International Airport, Washington, D.C.   Passengers will remain on the airplane in Doha.

We expect this may be the final U.S. government-organized flight returning to the United States from Bangladesh during the COVID-19 crisis.  We urge U.S. citizens who wish to return to the United States to take advantage of this opportunity or be prepared to remain in Bangladesh until commercial flights resume.

If you wish to travel to Washington, D.C. on this flight, even if you previously submitted your information, please fill out this form by 4 p.m. on Friday, April 10.  Please do not call the Embassy to confirm your information; we will e-mail you if you are confirmed for a seat on this flight.  Please keep your phone nearby and check your e-mail regularly in case the Embassy needs to contact you.

Please understand this flight is not free.  All passengers will need to reimburse the U.S. Government for the cost of the flight.  A legal document, called a promissory note, for the full cost of the flight must be signed by each adult passenger before boarding.  Currently, we do not know the cost of each ticket.  No cash or credit card payments will be accepted at the airport.  Please review payment information on promissory notes (DS-5528) here.  While your passport will not be canceled, U.S. citizens who have signed a loan agreement for repatriation may not be eligible for new passports until the loan is repaid.

You will be responsible for any arrangements or costs (lodging, onward destination, or local transportation, etc.) beyond Washington, D.C.  Unfortunately, the U.S. Embassy is unable to book any onward travel or other arrangements for you.

Unless you receive an email from the U.S Embassy in Bangladesh confirming your flight, please do not come to the airport in Dhaka.

You can contact the U.S. Embassy in Dhaka, Bangladesh, located on Madani Avenue, Baridhara, Dhaka, Bangladesh 1212, at (88) (02) 5566-2000, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday through Thursday except for holidays.  On holidays, during weekends or after-hours for emergencies U.S. citizens can call (88) (02) 5566-2000 and press “0” and ask for the duty officer.
