Health/Travel Alert – U.S. Embassy Dhaka, Bangladesh

Event: Countrywide Lockdown Extended Through July 15

The Government of Bangladesh (GoB) announced a continuation of the countrywide lockdown from June 16 through July 15 to limit the spread of the COVID-19 virus.  For additional lockdown information please read the full GoB circular at https://cabinet.gov.bd/.  The circular is available under the “Notice Board.”  Per the circular:

  1. Emergency services, to include vehicles and personnel, will be available; the GoB designated tax and revenue collection as part of these services.
  2. The GoB is monitoring the lockdown through police patrols and mobile magistrate courts to ensure individuals and businesses are adhering to COVID-19 health guidelines; the police have the authority to fine violators.
  3. All GoB government, semi-government, and non-government offices will be open and must abide by COVID-19 mitigation protocols.
  4. All modes of public transport including inter-district transportation may carry passengers at up to 50 percent of seating capacity. Passengers and operators must wear masks and abide by COVID-19 mitigation protocols.
  5. International and domestic flights will operate. For updated information on flights, please consult the latest Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) circulars.
  6. Hotels, restaurants, and food shops will operate at up to 50 percent customer capacity from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Customers must wear masks and abide by COVID-19 mitigation protocols.
  7. Grocery stores, pharmacies, banks, and shopping malls will be open and must abide by COVID-19 mitigation protocols.
  8. Tourist locations, resorts, and community centers will be closed.
  9. Social, political, and religious gatherings are not allowed.
  10. Deputy Commissioners of districts with high COVID-19 infection rates may consult with their technical committees and take any necessary actions, to include stricter lockdown measures, in their respective jurisdictions to prevent further infection rate increases.

The U.S. Embassy reminds all U.S. citizens to practice sound personal security measures which include following GoB laws and local government ordinances and to always carry a fully charged work or personal cell phone.
