English Language Programs in Bangladesh

The English Language Programs of U.S. Embassy Dhaka are committed to supporting English language learners and educators in Bangladesh, fostering mutual understanding between the United States and Bangladesh, developing critical thinking capabilities, and creating professional development opportunities for a wide range of audiences.   

Major programs under the English Language Program are the English Access Microscholarship Program, the English Language Fellow (EL Fellow) Program, the English Language Specialist (EL Specialist) Program, the Virtual Educator Program, and the Online Professional English Network (OPEN) Program. 

English Access Microscholarship Program

The English Access Microscholarship Program provides a foundational English language course to high-achieving 13 to 17-year-old students from socio-economically disadvantaged and marginalized communities around the worldSince the program’s inception in 2004, approximately 1,500 Bangladeshi students have participated in the Access Program, joining a global network of more than 100,000 graduates in over 85 countries.   

EL Fellow Program

The EL Fellow Program is a 10-month long in-person assignment under which experienced and dedicated American English language educators work with host institutions around the world to improve the quality of English instructionEnglish Language Fellows have previously worked with Rajshahi University, Varendra University, and Premier University. 

Virtual Educator Program

The Virtual English Language Educator Program offers highly qualified U.S. educators in the field of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) a unique and completely online opportunity to support English language learning around the world, participate in public diplomacy, and build mutual connectionsVirtual Educators are experienced and dedicated English language professionals with a graduate degree, preferably in TESOL or a related fieldVirtual Educator projects range in length from a few weeks to a semesterProjects include online English language teaching, teacher training, and cultural exchange. 

Online Professional English Network (OPEN) Program

The Online Professional English Network (OPEN) Program offers two types of professional development opportunities for English language educators: Global Online Courses and Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs).   • All OPEN Programs courses use the latest in instructional technology to provide participants with an interactive distance-learning experience and are designed to familiarize participating teachers with current methods and issues in the field of English as a Foreign Language.  
  • MOOCs are self-paced or facilitated courses that are open to an unlimited number of participants.  MOOCS provide participants the opportunity to complete study on their own schedule.

American English: Our American English website is a free resource center for teaching and learning English as a Foreign Language (EFL).  The website has a large variety of downloadable resources for learners and educators to discover more about American English and culture.
