Demonstration Alert – U.S. Embassy (Dhaka, Bangladesh) (August 2, 2018)

Location: Dhaka, other major cities across Bangladesh.

Event: Local sources report ongoing student protests in various areas throughout Dhaka and other major cities across Bangladesh.  The demonstrations are reportedly in reaction to a bus accident that caused the deaths of two students on Sunday, July 29.

According to local news, some public transport and privately owned vehicles have been vandalized during these demonstrations.  Expect significant traffic congestion due to blockages along major roadways.  We encourage you to remain vigilant, as the demonstrations could continue for the next several days.

Previous protests in Bangladesh have turned violent, resulting in traffic disruptions, injuries, and deaths.  Participants are known to throw rocks and debris.  Security forces are known to use tear gas and other crowd control measures against demonstrators, including firearms with rubber bullets.

  • Expect heavier than normal traffic congestion throughout the day.
  • Avoid large crowds and protests.
