Are You An English Language Educator? Do You Want To Teach Your Students English For Media Literacy?

DHAKA, May 2, 2021 – The U.S. Department of State is sponsoring a free “English for Media Literacy for Educators” Massive Online Open Course (MOOC) designed to introduce English as a Foreign Language (EFL) educators to the theory and practice of teaching about media literacy to EFL students.  Through informative videos and readings, participants will learn to teach English with a focus on media literacy for students of various ages and English proficiency.  In addition, participants will have access to resources to share with education colleagues who are interested in teaching about media literacy.  The MOOC is self-paced, meaning participants study independently, without facilitation from an instructor.  It is offered by the Online Professional English Network (OPEN), a U.S. Department of State initiative, and is administered by FHI 360, a U.S.-based nonprofit human development organization.

Enrollment is currently open.  Participants may enroll in this course until June 4, 2021.  After enrolling, you may log in at any time — day or night — to access the course.  All modules of coursework must be completed by June 13, 2021.  Participants who complete the required activities with a score of 70% or higher will receive a digital badge and certificate.  This “English for Media Literacy for Educators” MOOC is designed for adult non-native English-speaking teachers of English and education professionals interested in professional development opportunities.

At the end of this course, participants will be able to use techniques and strategies to teach students how to access, analyze, evaluate, and communicate in English using media and encourage active inquiry and critical thinking in all skill areas, such as through fact-checking, identifying reliable sources, and understanding bias.  Participants will be able to utilize media for instructive practices that develop informed and engaged learners and citizens.  Participants will also learn how to find reliable online resources, adapt them for use in their EFL classroom, and instruct peer-educators about key media literacy teaching techniques.
