DHAKA, May 2, 2021 – The U.S. Department of State is sponsoring a free “Assessment of English Language Learners” Massive Online Open Course (MOOC) for English language educators interested in improving teaching practices by creating courses with engaging and practical assessments tied to learning outcomes. From learning about the principles of backward design to exploring the main types of assessment for use in language teaching and learning, this course will help education professionals select appropriate assessment tools for different groups of students. During the course, participants will practice new assessment techniques. The MOOC is self-paced, meaning participants study independently, without facilitation from an instructor. It is offered by the Online Professional English Network (OPEN), a U.S. Department of State initiative, and is administered by FHI 360, a U.S.-based nonprofit human development organization.
Enrollment is currently open. Participants may enroll in this five-module course until July 16, 2021. After enrolling, participants may log in at any time — day or night — to access the course. All five modules of coursework must be completed by July 26, 2021. Participants who complete the required activities with a score of 70% or higher will receive a digital badge and certificate. This “Assessment of English Language Learners” MOOC is designed for adult non-native English-speaking teachers of English and education professionals interested in professional development opportunities.
At the end of this course, participants will be able to explain the main types of assessment used for language teaching and learning and identify applicable assessment types for teaching various language skills. They will be able to identify an assessment need for a group of students, choose one or more appropriate assessment techniques to meet that need, and be able to explain the results of the new assessment technique(s).
