Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) Program 2021-22

The U.S. Embassy in Dhaka is pleased to announce the Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) program for 2021-22, which will take place August 2021 – May 2022.  The FLTA is a nine-month, non-degree earning program.  Its primary goal is to strengthen foreign language instruction at U.S. colleges and universities, while providing junior-level teachers of English and related fields the opportunity to refine their skills, increase their English language proficiency, and enhance their knowledge of the United States.

FLTA participants from Bangladesh typically teach Bengali-language classes to American students.  Teachers and students learn about each other’s cultures and to build mutual understanding between the United States and Bangladesh.  Fulbright FLTA participants assist in up to 20 hours of language instruction per week and are required to enroll in at least two courses per semester, one of which must be in American Studies.  Fulbright FLTA participants will facilitate cultural events, language clubs, and discussion groups.  They will interact with the host community through extracurricular activities and community outreach projects.

An eligible candidate must:

  • Be a teacher of English or a related field (e.g. American Studies, Journalism and Media, and American/English Literature) at the university level, and must be completely fluent in English;
  • Have completed a master’s degree or a four-year bachelor’s degree no later than June 1, 2019;
  • Have a valid minimum TOEFL score of 80 or IELTS score of 7.0;* and
  • Be resident in Bangladesh throughout the nomination and selection process.

Applicants must demonstrate maturity, dependability, integrity, and professionalism.  Material misrepresentation, including plagiarism, at any time during the application or grant period is grounds for removal from further consideration during the selection process or grant termination, as well as ineligibility for future participation.  Family members are not permitted to accompany participants during the program.

The application submission deadline is Friday, July 31, 2020Applications received after the deadline will not be considered.  All required documents, including the following supplemental forms must be submitted online by the same deadline:

  1. Three letters of reference;
  1. Attested copies of academic transcripts and certificates from each post-secondary institution (Bachelor’s and Master’s); and
  1. Valid TOEFL or IELTS score, if available.*

Fulbright FLTA participants must return to their home countries upon completion of the program.  Participants must fulfill the two-year home residency requirement required by the J-1 visa.   Participants pledge to demonstrate their commitment to enhancing mutual understanding by returning to their home countries and sharing the skills and knowledge that they have gained as program participants.

*Due to the COVID-19 virus in Bangladesh, applicants may submit applications without a valid TOEFL or IELTS score.  We strongly recommend that candidates register for the test as soon as testing centers reopen and email the TOEFL or IELTS test report to sultanar1@state.gov.
